Twenty Years Strong

Heroes Take Manhattan

For four days, the Javits Center becomes the centre of a very different New York. New York Comic Con returns from October 8–11, and this year it celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Inside the Javits Center

The event is everything fans wait for all year. Panels bring creators and audiences together. Artist Alley showcases illustrators and independent talent. Gaming areas, collectibles and exclusive merchandise fill the halls. And then there is the cosplay — hours, sometimes months, of work turning favourite characters into something you can meet in person.

For first-time visitors, a little planning helps. Comfortable shoes, a charged phone and a rough idea of which panels you want to see can make the day far more enjoyable. The crowds are part of the fun, but so is taking a moment to step outside and recharge.

Twenty years in, Comic Con is no longer just an event for one community. It is a celebration of storytelling across comics, film, television and games, and a place where everyone is welcome to bring their own version of fandom.

The Adventure Continues Outside

A visit to Comic Con does not have to end when the doors close. New York is full of places to continue the adventure. Walk through Times Square, take a break in Central Park, grab a classic New York slice or hunt down a local comic shop that might have the issue you have been searching for.

From pizza and bagels to delis and late-night diners, New York has an option for every break between panels, and some of the most memorable meals happen in places you only find by asking someone who has already been.

Find Your Next Stop

With so many choices in one city, it helps to know where to go. The Credible Captain map can help you discover places nearby and see what other customers experienced before you arrive — so your next stop is worth the detour.

Whether you are travelling for Comic Con or simply exploring New York this weekend, make room for both the event and the city around it.

Because in New York, you do not need a cape to have an origin story.
